Press Conference at Brigham and Women’s Hospital: Dallas Wiens Speaks After First U.S. Full Face Transplant
On Monday, April 2, at 11 a.m. ET, Dallas Wiens—the first person in the U.S. to receive a full face transplant—will speak at a press conference at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH).
He will share his experiences after the surgery, his life as a father, and his work with the About Face Foundation, which he founded.
Wiens’ surgery was performed by a team of over 30 medical professionals and lasted more than 15 hours. The procedure involved replacing his nose, lips, facial skin, muscles for movement, and nerves for function and sensation.
The face graft was made possible after the donor’s family gave consent, as face donation requires direct family approval—organ donor registration alone is not sufficient. BWH is a leader in face transplantation and actively seeks candidates, supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.
BWH has a long history of transplant innovation. In 1954, it performed the world’s first successful human organ transplant (a kidney) and has since achieved many milestones, including New England’s first heart transplant (1984), Massachusetts’ first heart-lung transplant (1992), the nation’s first triple (1995) and quintuple (2004) organ transplants, and over 30 lung transplants in 2008. In 2006, the hospital reached 100 kidney transplants in a year for the first time.
Today, Brigham and Women’s Hospital is recognized as one of the world’s leading transplant centers.
